Speech & Language Therapist

Hi! I’m Kara Moore Penney, and I am a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) and English as a Foreign Language Instructor from New Jersey, USA. I received my Bachelors and Masters degrees from the University of Rhode Island.

I have worked in American public schools for five years, and recently completed one year of teaching English and providing speech therapy in Japan! I am passionate about combining my speech-language pathology background with my love of language learning and acquisition.

I am skilled in screenings, evaluations, and therapy. My caseload has included students of all backgrounds and ability levels, ranging from articulation and language needs to complex medical needs. Collaboration has always been at the center of my approach as an SLP. Incorporating the input of the student, family members, and other therapists to ensure a whole-child approach is of utmost importance to me.

During the early years of my career working as a school based SLP, I noticed an influx of students with second language learning needs. I realize that in order to best support these learners, I needed to understand more about both their linguistic backgrounds, as well as utilizing English as a second language. I recently completed courses through the University of San Diego and Columbia University Leader’s Project that have focused on how mono- and bi-lingual students acquire and use the English language. I regularly participate in continuing education classes in order to advance my knowledge of speech and language topics.

I’m an American and I speak English.
